Apophthegmata
The Sayings of the Desert Fathers — the primary literary legacy of early monasticism, collected 4th–6th centuries.
The Apophthegmata Patrum are short, vivid accounts of the Egyptian desert monks' practice and teaching. They survive in alphabetical and systematic collections. Not systematic theology but direct testimony to the lived experience of compunction, discernment, humility, and love: 'A brother asked Abba Moses for a word. The old man said: Go, sit in your cell, and your cell will teach you everything.'
