Beatitude

Blessed — the state of those who share in the divine life; also the eight blessings of the Sermon on the Mount.

Makarios (blessed, happy) is the word Christ uses for the eight Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-10). In Orthodox theology the Beatitudes are not moral advice but a description of the eschatological state breaking into the present: the poor in spirit, the mourners, the meek, the pure in heart — these are already participating in the Kingdom. The Beatitudes are sung at the Divine Liturgy on Sundays.
