Confessor
One who confesses the faith under persecution — a title given to those who suffered but were not martyred.
Confessor (homologetes, one who professes) is the ecclesiastical title given to those who suffered for the faith — imprisonment, torture, exile — but were not killed. Distinguished from martyrs (who were killed) and from non-martyr saints. The most celebrated confessor in Orthodox history is St. Maximus the Confessor, who had his tongue and right hand removed for refusing the Monothelite Typos. His title 'the Confessor' expresses the specific character of his witness: suffering for the confession of true Christology.
