Docetism
The heresy that Christ only appeared to be human — his body was a phantom; one of the earliest and most persistent distortions.
Docetism (from dokein, to seem/appear) is the heresy that Christ only appeared to have a physical body and to suffer: his humanity was a phantom, his passion an illusion. One of the earliest heresies, combated by Ignatius of Antioch who insists that Christ 'truly was born, truly ate and drank, truly was persecuted under Pontius Pilate, truly was crucified and died.' If Christ only appeared to suffer, no genuine union of God with human flesh has occurred and the Resurrection is equally illusory.
