The Fall
The primal disobedience of Adam and Eve — the wound in human nature that Christ came to heal.
The Fall (he ptosis) is the event described in Genesis 3: the first human beings' disobedient transgression of God's commandment, resulting in the mortality, corruption, and spiritual blindness of human nature. Orthodox theology interprets the Fall not primarily as guilt (the Western, especially Augustinian, emphasis) but as a wound: human nature is now sick, mortal, and inclined toward evil. Christ comes not primarily to pay a debt but to heal a wound — the Incarnation is the therapy for the Fall, not the satisfaction of a legal claim.
