Sanctification

Being made holy — the ongoing process of transformation by the Holy Spirit; the middle stage between justification and glorification.

Hagiasmos (sanctification, from hagios, holy) is the process by which the Holy Spirit transforms the believer into the holiness that belongs to God. In Orthodox theology, sanctification is not sharply distinguished from justification or glorification as in Western Protestant theology — the entire process of theosis is a single movement of God's grace making the human person genuinely holy. Sanctification encompasses the sacramental life, the ascetical struggle, and the gifts of the Spirit, all working together to restore the human person to the likeness of God.
