Theotokos

God-bearer — the title of the Virgin Mary defined at Ephesus (431 AD); primarily a Christological statement.

Theotokos (God-bearer, Mother of God) is the title of the Virgin Mary defined by the Council of Ephesus (431 AD). It is primarily a Christological statement: the Person born of Mary is the divine Person of the eternal Son. Mary is not the source of the divine nature but bore in her womb the divine Person of the Son in his human nature. The Theotokos title is the guarantee of the Incarnation's genuineness.
