Unmercenary

The holy unmercenaries — saints who healed the sick without accepting payment; Cosmas and Damian, Cyrus and John, Panteleimon.

The Anargyroi (from an, without, and argyros, silver) are the holy unmercenary healers — saints who used the gift of healing given to them by God without accepting money for it. The most famous are Ss. Cosmas and Damian (commemorated on November 1 and July 1), Ss. Cyrus and John (January 31), and the Great Martyr Panteleimon (July 27). They received the gift of healing as a charism and administered it freely to all who came to them, regardless of ability to pay. Their example embodies the principle that spiritual gifts are given for the benefit of the Church, not for personal enrichment.
