Catechesis

Christian instruction — the formation of the faith through systematic teaching of the Gospel and the Church's life.

Catechesis (from katechein, to instruct by voice — lit. 'to sound down into') is the systematic instruction of the faithful in the Christian faith. In the early Church, catechesis was the preparation for baptism: typically three years of formation, concluding with the mystagogy (post-baptismal instruction in the meaning of the sacraments). In the Orthodox Church today, catechesis encompasses both pre-baptismal formation and the ongoing formation of the faithful through preaching, liturgy, and personal instruction.
