Deisis

Intercession — the central icon of the iconostasis: Christ enthroned with the Theotokos and St. John the Baptist interceding.

The Deisis (prayer, supplication) is the central icon of the iconostasis: Christ Pantocrator enthroned, with the Theotokos on his right and St. John the Baptist on his left, both turned toward him in the gesture of intercession. It expresses the theology of the Church's prayer: creation and the Church's perfect embodiment interceding before the Incarnate Lord.
