Evil
The privation of the good — in Orthodox theology, evil has no independent existence but is the absence or distortion of the good.
Evil (kakia, wickedness; hamartia, sin; poneria, malice) in Orthodox theology has no independent ontological existence: it is a privation, a distortion, or an absence of the good. God created all things good (Genesis 1:31); evil enters through the misuse of freedom. This Augustinian-Dionysian understanding of evil as privation is standard in Orthodox theology, though not to the exclusion of the reality of personal evil spirits (demons) who act and who represent irrevocably willed opposition to God.
