Image and Likeness
The distinction between the image of God (given at creation) and the likeness (the goal of theosis).
The distinction between image (eikon) and likeness (homoiosis) in Genesis 1:26 — 'Let us make man according to our image and likeness' — was developed by the Fathers into a significant theological concept. The image is given at creation: reason, freedom, and the capacity for God. The likeness is the goal of the spiritual life: the actualization of the image through theosis, the progressive transformation of the person to reflect the divine attributes (goodness, love, holiness) with increasing clarity. The Fall damaged the likeness while the image remained.
