Aionios

Of the age to come — translated 'eternal' but properly meaning 'of the age'.

Aionios means belonging to the aion — the age, the epoch. 'Eternal life' (zoe aionios) is not primarily about duration but quality: the life of the eschatological age breaking into the present. Eternal life is participation in the divine life of the coming age, already begun in Christ's Resurrection and received in the Eucharist.
