Forerunner

The title of St. John the Baptist — the one who goes before to prepare the way for Christ.

Prodromos (forerunner, one who runs ahead) is the title given to St. John the Baptist: the one who prepared the way for Christ, baptizing at the Jordan and pointing to the Lamb of God. In Orthodox iconography St. John is depicted with wings (as the angel of the Lord, Malachi 3:1), holding his own severed head and pointing to Christ. He is the greatest prophet and the last of the old covenant.
